Pittsburgh Power Squadron-Award

Brunswick Award for Boater Education 2015

Pittsburgh Power Squadron has been working with Fox Chapel Marine for several years.
As classroom locations became expensive a couple of years ago, we looked for additional places for teaching the ABC3 class. At the same time, we received a call from Diane Schafer at Fox Chapel as a result of the Dealer Advantage program. She wanted to see if we were interested in us teaching in their space. Fortunately we were and the relationship began.
After the first ABC3 classes, we set up a meeting with her to show off our goods. We took lists of USPS Courses and Seminars for her to review. One thing that immediately caught her eye was the Boating on Rivers, Lakes and Locks Seminar. Fox Chapel Marine is situated on the Allegheny River at lock 2 one pool above Pittsburgh and boaters must navigate this lock to visit the city by boat. Our thought was to offer the seminar and then put people on boats to actually cruise through the lock and back. Diane loved this idea. It was a huge success.
In 2014 we sat down with Diane to discuss the plan for the summer which included us teaching ABC3 and the Locking and anchoring seminars as well as a 4 hour Kids Boating Safety Class. For the kids class, the marina provided lunch and use of extra PFD's. She also invited us to set up a booth during their Marina Days to inform local boaters of Pittsburgh Power Squadron activities. We have a Vessel Examiner who docks at Fox Chapel ready to do VSC's as needed. It has helped us also because Diane will advertise our classes in the Marina Newsletter. This year we completed the application for the Brunswick Boater Education competition.
This has proved to be a win-win for us just as Dusty McCoy outlined several years ago at the USPS Annual Meeting. They bring in the students and we teach the seminars.
